How do you achieve mystical transcendence via musical practice and can you find spiritual utopias in music? And as music has been used in spiritual practice since ancient times, what are some of the elements that drive this process?

Sufi dancer (KT Lindsay Photography)

Into the Music looks at the work of three contemporary musicians: Turkish maestro Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Australian percussionist Michael Askill and shakuhachi flute player Riley Lee, and how their practice has been influenced by philosophies and writings in Buddhism and Sufism.

Historian and audio producer Harvey Broadbent has created an impressionistic musical mix to capture the mood of these musicians and to illustrate cultural cross-over and collaboration in music performance. The program includes music from an array of sources including John Cage performed by Synergy, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, the Beatles, Steve Reich, Mercan Dede and Australian performer/composer, Kim Cunio.

Readers: Sandy Gore and Peter McCredie
Texts: Excerpts from writings by Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, Hafiz, Hildegard Von Bingen and Arthur Rimbaud
