Wake-Up Call: The Latest On Nate Allen

A report surfaced Monday night that safety Nate Allen had been arrested by the Fort Myers Police Department earlier that afternoon.

He was brought in for questioning but has since been released.

The Fort Myers Police Department sent the following statement to Phillymag Tuesday morning: “The Nate Allen investigation remains active. Allen is no longer in police custody and has not been charged with a crime at this time. The Fort Myers Police Department is currently working with the 20^thJudicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office for case review.”

Les Bowen caught up with Allen on Tuesday.

“I sat in a holding cell for 4 1/2 hours. I seriously thought I was being punked, at first.”

Finally, he was questioned by a detective, Allen said. The detective told him that a woman or women — Allen isn’t sure which — had accused him of “masturbating while making faces at them” from the cab of his custom-wheeled Ford F-250 pickup at a busy intersection on Cleveland Ave., a major Fort Myers roadway.

“Forget football,” said Allen, who is set to become a free agent next month and undoubtedly will have to explain the incident to any team that might want to sign him. “Being associated with something this disgusting is repulsive. I have a 17-year-old sister, a niece … Anybody would want to destroy someone” who would do such a thing, he said.

Allen said before he was released, he was told the woman or women had initially described the offender as being 45-to-50-years old, with curly hair. Allen is 27 and keeps his hair cut close to the skull. He also said he was wearing a hat while driving home.

A source close to the situation told CSN’s Derrick Gunn that Allen was stopped by a Fort Myers police officer shortly after eating at a Red Lobster. Allen was informed he was being accused by a 16-year-old girl of indecent exposure and was brought in for questioning. The incident allegedly took place near the restaurant.

However, after the accuser changed her story several times, police concluded there was not enough evidence to charge Allen and released him.

Another source told Gunn that Allen returned to his home in Fort Myers and is “shaken and embarrassed” by the ordeal.

Allen, a Cape Coral, Florida native, will become a free agent when the league year opens on March 10. A second round pick of the Eagles in 2010, Allen has played in 74 games over five seasons in Philadelphia.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

The Eagles once turned down a trade that would have sent Nick Foles to Cleveland for receiver Josh Gordon, according to ESPN’s Phil Sheridan.

A little context helps here. Gordon was facing a two-game suspension for violating the NFL substance abuse policy. Foles had just been named the Eagles’ No. 2 quarterback after losing a competition with Michael Vick during the preseason.

The Browns, who had Jason Campbell and Brandon Weeden as their top two quarterbacks, wanted Foles as their starter. At that point, former Eagles president Joe Banner was running the Browns. Banner had been with the Eagles in 2012 when they drafted Foles.

The Eagles, in their first year with head coach Chip Kelly, were concerned about Gordon’s impending suspension. They were also high on Foles.

Jared Sherman of CSNPhilly.com released his second mock draft of 2015 and has the Eagles selecting Washington CB Marcus Peters:

I’m sticking with Peters here. I don’t think he’s a bad dude — he was dismissed from the team in November but has since offered a mea culpa — and talent-wise, I believe he’s the second best corner in the draft behind P.J. Williams. The Birds need athletes like Peters who play with an edge.
