The Wisconsin Assembly honored the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh men’s basketball team on Tuesday, April 9 with a 2019 Joint Resolution at the Capitol in Madison.

The Wisconsin Assembly celebrated the Titans for winning the 2019 National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division III National Championship; their first in the program’s 121-year history.

“In this chamber room we have recognized a lot of our state champions, certainly the two before us today (UW-Stevens Point men’s hockey and UW-Madison women’s hockey), and I have been waiting for this day,” said Rep. Gordon Hintz, the Democratic Leader of the Wisconsin State Assembly and Oshkosh native, when introducing the Titans. “As a basketball fan, I couldn’t be more proud.”

Seven members of the national championship team, along with Titan head coach Matt Lewis, assistant coach Casey Corn and UW Oshkosh Chancellor Andrew Leavitt were in attendance.

UW Oshkosh finished its historic season by reaching its second straight NCAA Final Four, which included a program-record 21-game winning streak, the school’s first outright Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) title since 1978, and an overall record of 29-3.

“We are very fortunate to have incredible young men in our program,” said Lewis as he addressed the assembly Tuesday. “I say it often, but good teams have good players and great teams have great teammates. It is an incredible honor to work with all the athletes in our program, especially the Wisconsin ones.”

Along with celebrating his players, Lewis took the opportunity to thank those in the Wisconsin Assembly for all they do for Wisconsin.

“There is something special about a high school student from Wisconsin that goes on to college, especially those staying in the state and the UW system. Thank you for everything you do to support Wisconsin high schools and the UW system,” Lewis said.
