WEST COVINA — The coroner’s office Saturday released the name of a 79-year-old man killed when he and his wife were struck by a car while crossing a West Covina street.

Ramon Balico was a resident of La Puente, the coroner’s office said.

The collision was reported just after 7 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Sunset and Fairgrove avenues, police said.

Balico and his 72-year-old wife were walking west across Sunset Avenue in a crosswalk when they were struck by a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze driven by a 27-year-old woman, according to West Covina Police Department Public Information Officer Rudy Lopez.

The victims were struck while the eastbound Chevrolet driver was making a left turn onto Fairgrove Avenue, Lopez said.

Both Balico and his wife were taken to County-USC Medical Center, where the man was pronounced dead on arrival, the officer said.

The woman suffered moderate injuries and was expected to recover, Lopez said.

The Chevrolet driver stopped at the scene and cooperated with investigators, he said.

The intersection was closed to traffic for several hours while police investigated the collision, Lopez said.
