Eric McCormack is ready to travel through time for Netflix.
The Will & Grace alum will star in Travelers, a sci-fi drama for the streaming giant produced in partnership with Canada’s Peacock Alley Entertainment and Showcase, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Created by Stargate‘s Brad Wright, the drama takes place hundreds of years in the future and focuses on the last surviving humans who discover the means of sending consciousness back through time, directly into people in the 21st century. These “travelers” assume the lives of seemingly random people, while secretly working as teams to perform missions to save humanity from a terrible future.
McCormack will star as FBI special agent Grant MacLaren, the team’s leader. His fellow travelers are Mackenzie Porter as Marcy, a young, intellectually disabled woman in the care of her social worker, David (Patrick Gilmore);?Trevor (Jared Paul Abrahamson), a high school quarterback; Carly (Nesta Marlee Cooper), a single mom in an abusive relationship; and Philip (Reilly Dolman), a heroin-addicted college student. Armed only with their knowledge of history and an archive of social media profiles, the travelers discover that 21st century lives and relationships are as much a challenge as their high-stakes missions.
. And if there is, someone else is going to have to slow down because we have big plans for 2016,” said Ted Sarandos.”]
The series will stream on Netflix outside of Canada, where it will be broadcast on Showcase. The drama was originally developed at the CFC Prime Time TV Program with Canadian writers. Wright, who co-created Emmy-nominated Stargate SG-1 and its follow-ups, Stargate: Atlantis and SGU, will showrun the drama. Nick Hurran (Sherlock) will direct the pilot, with Canadians Andy Mikita (Lost Girl), Helen Shaver (Vikings), Martin Wood (Killjoys), Will Waring (Continuum) and Amanda Tapping (Continuum) set to direct future episodes.
Travelers is produced by Peacock Alley in association with Showcase and Netflix.
“My old friend Brad Wright has created a fantastic, complex story with some very rich and complicated characters, and I’m awfully happy to be one of them,” McCormack said.
The role marks McCormack’s return to the small screen following DirecTV’s Full Circle and TNT’s Perception. He’s repped by Gersh, Coronel Group and Sloane Offer.
Travelers is Netflix’s latest original series as the streaming giant looks to invest $5 billion in original programming in 2016.
The drama is the latest time-travel series in the works. Syfy has found success with reboot 12 Monkeys; Comedy Central is prepping Time Traveling Bong from the Broad City duo and The CW has DC Comics’ take Legends of Tomorrow. On the pilot side, Fox is readying the H.G. Wells drama Time After Time and comedy Making History from The Last Man on Earth duo; and NBC has the Shawn Ryan/Eric Kripke entry Time.
