The R&B singer R Kelly and the late singer Aaliyah's "secret marriage" is set to be used in his sexual abuse trial.

R Kelly and Aaliyah's secret marriage in 1994 has been an essential piece of information a lawyer is using to prove Kelly has shown an intimate interest in younger women.

R. Kelly Allegedly Believes He's Being Punished Because Of His "Celebrity Status"

The "Bump N' Grind" singer and the late Aaliyah have both resolutely refused to comment on their secret marriage, however all existing documents have proved that it was an official marriage.

According to Page Six, Illinois federal prosecutors have written to a judge in the Northern District of Illinois to appeal the marriage. The prosecutors argue that R. Kelly should not be released on bail pending his trial, as his lawyers have requested.

“The government produced in discovery to the defendant the official marriage application, marriage certificate, and annulment records for this marriage".

"Far from being a one-time mistake, defendant’s sexual abuse of minors was intentional and prolific.”

R. Kelly and Aaliyah applied to be wed in Illinois on Aug, 31 1994. Although Aaliyah was merely 15 years old at the time (and Kelly 27), she was marked on application as 18.

When Aaliyah's family learnt about the marriage, they allegedly demanded that Aaliyah called it off. The following year, the marriage was annulled.

Kelly is currently facing several charges for sexual abuse and child pornography. The prosecutors believe the marriage documents is proof that R. Kelly has exploited minors and poses a threat to society if he is released from jail.

“The extent of defendant’s sexual abuse of minor girls is staggering: the Indictment in this district alone alleges five minor victims, and as proffered at the detention hearing, defendant sexually abused those girls hundreds of times before they turned 18 years old,” the filing reads.

In other R Kelly news, TMZ reported that the singer had been moved from solitary confinement to gen pop.
