Sunday’s regional sports roundup: No. 3 JMU ousts U.Va. in NCAA women’s lacrosse round of 16

Women’s lacrosse:

Senior midfielder Haley Warden and senior attacker Kristen Gaudian each scored four goals as third-seeded James Madison held off Virginia 15-12 in Harrisonburg to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals.

The Dukes (19-1) earned the right to host sixth-seeded Florida at 1 p.m. Saturday in a quarterfinal. It will be JMU’s first quarterfinal since 2010.

Avery Shoemaker and Sammy Mueller scored four goals apiece for U.Va. (10-10), which led 4-2 until JMU scored five straight goals over the last 4:50 of the first half.

The Cavaliers pulled within 12-11 before goals by Warden and Elena Romesburg re-established JMU’s command. …

No. 2 seed North Carolina beat Virginia Tech 17-8 in Raleigh, N.C., to end the Hokies’ first NCAA tournament appearance.

Paige Petty had three goals for Tech (14-7), her third hat trick of the season.

Marie McCool, Maggie Bill and Jamie Ortega each recorded hat tricks for the Tar Heels (16-3), who took a 5-0 lead and advanced to a home quarterfinal Saturday against Northwestern.

Track and field:

William and Mary’s men placed a best-ever third at the IC4A championships in Boston, which included 43 scoring teams.

Navy (72), Northeastern (63) and W&M (52) were the top three teams. Hampton was 12th with 23.

W&M’s 4×400-meter relay, which included freshman Miles Owens from Grafton High, was eighth in 3:15.42. The Tribe’s top individual finish Sunday was by Connor Atkinson, who posted a 53.18-second clocking in the 400-meter hurdles. …

In the Atlantic Coast Conference championships at Miami, Florida State’s men claimed the title with 116 points, while Syracuse totaled 108 to finish second. Virginia Tech was third with 105.5, while Virginia was sixth with 55.

U.Va.’s 4×400-meter relay, which included Jamestown High graduate Jordan Willis, placed sixth in 3:09.95. Cavaliers graduate student Tucker Rizzi of Williamsburg threw the javelin a career best 201 feet, 8 inches, to finish eighth.

In the women’s division, Miami won with 117 points, while Virginia Tech was second with 111 — including 40 combined from jumper Estzer Bajnok and middle-distance runner Rachel Pocratsky, who each won two events. U.Va. was sixth with 63.

In the 1,500 meters, Pocratsky ran the fastest time in the country (4:10.03) and broke the school record. A few hours later, she won the 800 in a season-best 2:03.36.

The Cavaliers were led by Julia McKee, who placed second in the triple jump at a school-record 43 feet, 5.75 inches.

With Tech finishing higher than Virginia, the Hokies won the Commonwealth Clash in back-to-back years — this time by 12.5 to 8.5. That trophy reflects head-to-head competition in many sports that both sponsor.

Baseball:

Texas-San Antonio breezed to an 11-2 win at Old Dominion, mathematically eliminating the Monarchs (15-33, 7-19) from qualifying for the Conference USA tournament. The Roadrunners won twice in the three-game series.

UTSA (28-21, 14-12 C-USA) scored in five of the first six innings. ODU got three hits apiece from Craig Lopez and Culver Lamb. …

William and Mary (15-35, 3-18 Colonial Athletic Association) lost 6-4 to Delaware in 10 innings on Senior Day at Plumeri Park.

The Tribe went ahead 4-2 with a three-run eighth, but the Blue Hens (28-23, 12-9) extended the game with a two-run ninth and scored twice in the 10th to hand senior Charlie Fletcher (0-4) a defeat.

Colin Lipke was 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBI for the Tribe. Hunter Smith and Luca Farina had two hits apiece. …

Miami scored fourth runs in the 10th inning to defeat Virginia Tech 12-8, giving the Hurricanes (25-25, 14-13 ACC) a three-game sweep of the Hokies (20-30, 8-19) in Blacksburg.

JD Mundy was 3 for 4 with two doubles and reached base five times for Tech. Nick Menken and Sam Fragale each had two hits and scored twice, while Joe Freiday Jr. also had a pair of hits.

Raymond Gil had three hits and three RBI for Miami, which scored eight unearned runs.

Softball:

James Madison, the Colonial Athletic Association regular-season champion, received an NCAA tournament at-large bid Sunday night and will face Ohio on Friday in a first-round game in Knoxville, Tenn. The Dukes and Bobcats split a pair of regular-season games in Harrisonburg.

The other first-round game in Knoxville pits No. 10 seed Tennessee against Monmouth.

Another first-round clash will pit Big South tournament champion Liberty against CAA tournament winner Hofstra. That game in Columbia, S.C., will be joined by ninth-seeded South Carolina hosting UNC Greensboro. …

Liberty took the Big South tournament title, defeating host Radford 5-1 Saturday for the Flames’ third championship.

Liberty (47-12) extended its winning streak to 17 games, dating to April 14, the second-longest active winning streak in Division I softball.

Autumn Bishop, who had a double and two RBI in the final, was named the tournament MVP.

Longwood junior right-hander Sydney Gay of Smithfield made the all-tournament team for the second time. She pitched 17 2/3 innings in the tournament, striking out 12. She gave up just one run in 7 2/3 innings in Longwood’s 12-inning semifinal loss to Radford.

Old Dominion took seventh place among eight teams in the Big 12 championship meet on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Taylor Phy was the only Monarch named to the All-Big 12 team.

Texas won with 48 points, while Oklahoma was second with 38. ODU had 10 points, finishing ahead of West Virginia (eight).

MINOR-LEAGUE BASEBALL:

International League:

Atlanta Braves prospect Austin Riley hit three home runs, including a grand slam, and had eight RBI as host Gwinnett (14-21) routed Norfolk 10-0 in Lawrenceville, Ga.

Stripers starter Kolby Allard held the Tides (19-15) to two hits in eight innings.

Eastern League:

Trenton earned a four-game split with Richmond by edging the Flying Squirrels 3-2 at The Diamond.

Chris Gittens hit a two-run homer in a three-run first inning and Trenton held on, though Miguel Gomez collected his first three-hit game of the season to lead the Flying Squirrels.
