Wisconsin Senate candidate Eric Hovde is unhappy that the media is covering his proliferation of MAGA election conspiracy theories.
In a new video posted to X, Hovde — a banking and real estate development executive challenging Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin — complained that news outlets were mischaracterizing his past statements about voting in nursing homes, implying that he was saying senior citizens shouldn't be allowed to vote. In reality, he said, he was just casting doubt that all the senior citizens who voted in 2020 actually did so.
"Let me tell you how a political hit job works, and the Democrats are experts at this," said Hovde. "So last week, in some news articles, there were written that I don't believe elderly should be able to vote. How did that come about? Because I absolutely believe the elderly should vote."
His actual statement, Hovde continued, was purely about "election integrity issues" and this got spread out of control through Democratic-controlled "phony news organizations." "It's patently false," he said. "It's fundamentally wrong."
The remarks at issue came from an interview Hovde gave on the Guy Benson Show, first reported by the left-leaning Heartland Signal, where he said, "We had nursing homes, where the sheriff of Racine investigated, where you had 100 percent voting in nursing homes. Well, if you're in a nursing home, you only have a five, six-month life expectancy. Almost nobody in a nursing home is in a point to vote."
Hovde did not explicitly say senior citizens shouldn't be allowed to vote; however, his remarks disparaging the idea most nursing home residents are of sound mind to vote in the first place generated widespread controversy and anger in the local press.
The claim that nursing homes in Wisconsin had a 100 percent voting rate is a conspiracy theory pushed by former President Donald Trump's allies that has already been debunked; voter turnout among nursing home residents in 2020 was completely in line with typical numbers, and the Racine County District Attorney declined to file charges in the investigation.

Former President Donald Trump could be digging himself a deeper hole by making no effort to appear remorseful about his actions in the Manhattan hush money trial, wrote former impeachment counsel Norm Eisen for The New York Times.
Trump is charged with felony business fraud for his alleged concealment of hush payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels, which Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg argues was a scheme to interfere with voters in the 2016 election. Trump denies these allegations, including that the affair happened in the first place — but furthermore, he has raised eyebrows for showing disrespect to potential jurors.
Based on this behavior, and the former president's track record, wrote Eisen, "There is every reason to believe that will not change even if he is convicted, and lack of remorse is a negative at sentencing. Justice [Juan] Merchan’s evaluation of Mr. Trump’s history and character may also be informed by the other judgments against him, including Justice Arthur Engoron’s ruling that Mr. Trump engaged in repeated and persistent business fraud, a jury finding that he sexually abused and defamed E. Jean Carroll and a related defamation verdict by a second jury."

Additionally, he added, Merchan could factor in that "Mr. Trump has been repeatedly held in contempt, warned, fined and gagged by state and federal judges," including "for statements he made that exposed witnesses, individuals in the judicial system and their families to danger." Trump's personal attacks on Merchan's daughter could make things even worse for him.
Of course, Eisen added, the outcome could hinge broadly on whether Trump wins the election — because while Trump cannot pardon himself of state charges if convicted, he could bring the full force of the Justice Department in litigation arguing that the conviction was unconstitutional. Either way, sentencing is likely to take place after the election.
So ultimately, Eisen concluded, "if Mr. Trump is convicted and sentenced to a period of incarceration, its ultimate significance is probably this: When the American people go to the polls in November, they will be voting on whether Mr. Trump should be held accountable for his original election interference."
Donald Trump has been forced to spend three days in court, listening to multiple Americans describe what they don't like him — and he doesn't seem happy.
On day three of jury selection in the New York hush money trial, the pool of prospective jurors got specific about their issues with Trump.
Lawfare's Tyler McBrien posted some of the quotes given as the various lawyers asked questions.
Trump's lawyer told potential jurors that some of the witnesses that will be called during the trial have expressed great dislike for Trump. One even said that they wanted revenge. The lawyer asked if people could look past that and focus on if such witnesses "met the burden of proof" on Trump's guilt or innocence.
“He seems very selfish and self-serving,” the juror told the court. She explained that she doesn't like that coming from a public servant.
“How he portrays himself in public seems to me ... he’s not my cup of tea,” she continued.

Another potential juror announced to the court, “I don’t have strong opinions about him, but I don’t like his persona. That doesn’t mean I can’t be fair and impartial.”
"Sometimes the way [Trump] may carry himself in public leaves something to be desired," a potential juror argued after saying she was a "centrist" and her personal feelings wouldn't impact her impartiality.
Another woman said she doesn't have strong opinions about Trump, but she has posted negatively about him on social media. That said, she confessed that she often posts negative things about politicians.
Such comments didn't pass Trump by.
After the potential juror suggested he was selfish, MSNBC's Yasmin Vossoughian said, "It seems the former president does not like this response, leaning back, crossing his arms in hearing these opinions of him."
One New Yorker said that they lived in, "One of Trump's constructions and had no complaints about how they were built," McBrien said.
At that, Trump nodded along approvingly.
