A fire ignited Tuesday morning in the garage of a home near the 200 block of SW 21st Terrace in Cape Coral.

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — When ten years old sisters Alyssa and Kayla were left home alone on Tuesday, they did what they do best, stick together. “I’m four minutes older, but she’s like the big sister,” said Alyssa Gray. The sisters said they smelled something funny inside the home on SW 21st Terrace when Kayla decided it was best to leave the house. “I just came downstairs and said I don’t want to be in here,” said Kayla Gray. Alyssa followed and once outside, the two saw fire coming from underneath the garage door. “It was pretty scary,” said Alyssa. Not knowing where to go once outside, the sisters ran next door and started knocking on doors. Juan Zuniga and his wife Kayla answered the door. “I heard bang bang and help please help and it was these two little girls who were frantic so I was called 911 and Juan ran inside to help the girls because they said their animals were inside,” said Kayla Wheeler. Zuniga was able to save four of the families five cats and he grabbed the bird cage that was also inside. “I knew those girls probably needed those animals especially when you think about your house being on fire so I didn’t think I just ran inside,” said Zuniga. Scott and Nicole Gray, the girls parents said they had decided to leave the girls home alone for the time it would take to go over to Scott’s mother’s house to help clean her house after she recently lost her husband. “We have not had the best of luck as a family. It was horrible getting that call,” said Gray. Thanks to the swift actions of these two twin sisters, everyone in the family including the pets are accounted for. The family is staying in a hotel currently and are waiting for inspections to be done so they can decide how to move forward. According to the Cape Coral Fire Department (CCFD), the fire was contained to the garage with no injuries and the cause was determined to be electrical and accidental. CCFD stated two girls were home at the time of the fire. The girls went to a neighbor’s house who helped call 911 and get animals out of the house safely. The garage fire caused an estimated $15,000 in damage, according to CCFD.
