Mary J. Blige's father was stabbed in January, and his girlfriend has recently been ordered to stand trial.

Cheryl White, 50, of Battle Creek, was charged with assault with intent to murder singer Mary J. Blige's father, and faces up to life in prison if found guilty, Battle Creek Enquirer reported.

Thomas Blige, 63, testified Monday, that his girlfriend, White, assaulted him with a knife on Jan. 23 after he caught her slashing his car tires.

"I was up early getting ready for school and I saw Cheryl White slashing my tires," Mary J. Blige's father told Calhoun County District Judge Frank Line. "As I went to her she started slashing me. She said something out of anger like, 'you won't mess with me.'"

Blige claimed to have been cut on the arm, throat and lung when White attacked him. He also told Assistant Prosecutor Rachel Delmont that he had managed to run to the apartment of a friend and call for help, after the 6:59 a.m. attack outside 200 Oakbrook Boulevard on south side of Battle Creek.

"I don't know how anyone can believe that witness," he said.

Mary J. Blige's father told Cheryl White's attorney, Jeffrey Schroder, during the questioning, that he was staying with a friend because he and his girlfriend White, had engaged in domestic disputes a day prior the stabbing.

"Me and Cheryl have serious domestic problems. The day before we were fighting and the police were called. We have verbal fights multiple times. An enormous number of times," he said.

Cheryl White and Mary J. Blige's father Thomas Blige, live in another apartment at the Arbors of Battle Creek.

Judge Line has ordered for the case to circuit court for trial after hearing Blige's statement.

Schroder contended that Mary J Blige father's testimony of the incident was unclear. However, Line stated there was enough probable cause to bind the case over to the higher court.
