Waynesboro 43, West Perry 40

ELLIOTTSBURG, Pa. — The Indians (5-4) built leads of 29-14 at the half and 43-27 after three quarters, then held off the Mustangs’ late rally Friday night.

Kenyon Johnson opened the scoring with an interception-return touchdown to give West Perry (7-2) a 7-0 lead less than three minutes in.

Quentin Gaskill answered with a 55-yard jet sweep score two plays later as Waynesboro tied it at 7.

The Mustangs regained the lead at 14-7 midway through the opening period.

Jay Alvarez’s 2-yard QB sneak pulled the Indians back into a tie at 14 early in the second quarter. He added a 1-yard score with 4:05 left in the half for a 21-14 lead, and his 28-yard score and a successful conversion made it 29-14 in the final minute of the half.

The Indians had 196 yards rushing and 118 passing in the first half while holding the Mustangs to 166 yards, 118 of it through the air.

Gaskill broke loose for his second long scoring run of the night, a 61-yarder that made it 36-14 early in the third quarter. West Perry cut it to 36-27 with touchdowns on its next two drives, but Alvarez’s fourth TD of the game, a 21-yarder, made it 43-27 late in the frame.

West Perry kept coming, scoring early in the fourth quarter to make it 44-33 and midway through the period to get within 43-40. The Mustangs then recovered a fumble, but the Indians held on.
