Students win bronze in national competition

Students from Pacific Ridge School recently won a bronze award for their entry in the 2018 Marine Debris Creative Advocacy Competition, sponsored by Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs. The competition challenged middle and high school students nationwide to design and lead campaigns in their school or community to teach others to reduce or prevent marine debris. The PacRidge team, New Ocean Blue, received $1,000 for their campaign, which educates about plastic pollution and marine debris by making presentations to North County elementary schools. The group also raises money for ocean conservation and hosts beach cleanups. New Ocean Blue has done more than 30 presentations over the past few years and more than 10 beach cleanups. New Ocean Blue includes seniors Sydney Schmitter, Grace Sandel, Yi Liu and Petra Engstrom; juniors Emily Adams and Elyssa Agresti; and sophomores Sophie Schmitter, Soren Engstrom, Evan Mickelson, Julian Stern and Nico Mejia.
