Mount Amwell Project preserving local cemetery

The Mount Amwell Project, Inc. and the Borough of Stockton announced that they have executed a long term lease agreement for the preservation of the historic Howell graveyard (A.K.A. the Rittenhouse cemetery) under N.J.S.A. 40A:12-14: Leasing of county or municipal real property, capital improvements or personal property. The Borough acquired the right with the support of the Mount Amwell Project to vest title of the abandoned cemetery under N.J.S.A 40:60-25.61: Abandoned burying ground or cemetery; application for order vesting title in municipality. The Superior Court of New Jersey Law Division in Flemington, NJ approved the petition to vest title to the Howell Graveyard in the borough of Stockton on January 16, 2018. The Mount Amwell Project will clear brush and trees from the plot and ensure that the headstones are preserved. Most of the work will be done by volunteers.

The Mount Amwell Project, Inc. is an IRS 501 (C) 3 organization formed in 2005 to preserve Hunterdon history.

Stockton is a borough in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The borough sits on the Delaware River at the western end of Amwell Valley. Historic places include the Stockton Inn (formerly known as Colligan's Stockton Inn) established in 1710 and the historic John Prall Jr. House and the Prallsville Mills Complex, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
