GILBERT, AZ — More than 190 million biscuits, 68 million pancakes, and more than 43 million servings of grits are served at Cracker Barrel restaurants across the country each year, according to the restaurant chain.

Next spring, those in Gilbert will have less of a drive to grab some of that old-fashioned fare because Cracker Barrel has confirmed its plans to open its first restaurant in the town -- and its 14 location in the state.

Hyland Stockton, coordinator of corporate communications for Cracker Barrel, said in an email that the company broke ground on the 10,000-square-foot restaurant on Monday near Higley and Baseline roads. When it opens, which is expected to be in spring 2020, it will have seating for up to 176 people.

She said the restaurant was expected to have more than 175 part-time and full-time positions available.

The first Cracker Barrel restaurant in Arizona opened in 1996 in Goodyear, she said. The last one to open was in 2008 in Prescott Valley.

The chain's other restaurants are in Buckeye, Casa Grande, Flagstaff, Glendale, Goodyear, Kingman, Mesa, Peoria, Phoenix, Prescott Valley, Tucson, and Yuma, according to its website.
