Cardinals announce the firing of OC Mike McCoy

In a move that can’t be considered too much of a surprise following Thursday’s humiliating performance, the Arizona Cardinals announced on Friday that they have fired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy.

“The Cardinals fired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy – a possibility that had been speculated about for a couple of weeks – and promoted quarterbacks coach Byron Leftwich to the job,” the team announced, via its official website.

As noted, there had been a ton of speculation that McCoy would in fact be fired. Despite being in his first season with the Cardinals, struggles on that side of the ball have been historically bad. Arizona ranks dead last in total offense at 220.7 total yards per game and 31st in points, averaging just over 13 per outing.

The move to fire McCoy coincides with the promotion of talented young coach Byron Leftwich. A former quarterback, he’s been seen as a potential offensive coordinator candidate for years.
