For the perfect fluffy rice every time, Australia's Monty Koludrovic recommends washing the grains before boiling them - which is something you've probably never thought of.

And we're afraid one quick flash under the tap just isn't enough, you need to do it a mammoth 30 TIMES.

Speaking on 9Honey's podcast What the F is for dinner, Monty said rinsing the rice removes any surface starch - which causes the grains to clump together and get gluey as they cook.

He explained: "If you picture the starch being microscopic grains of stickiness... as they absorb water, they don't have the ability to stand up to pressure so their structure is pasty.

"Whereas the starch in the rice helps it stand up and be fluffy."

The head chef, who runs The Dolphin Hotel in Sydney, added: "We've all cooked rice poorly and I'm still trying to work it out."

If you can't be bothered with all that washing, Monty recommends investing in a rice cooker - which he describes as a "gift from the Gods".
