Gunfire on I-59 in Birmingham leaves 1 seriously injured; 2 vehicles struck

Gunfire on a busy interstate in Birmingham Saturday afternoon left one person wounded.

Birmingham police East Precinct officers about 1:30 p.m. received a report of a person in a dark vehicle randomly shooting in the area of Interstate 59 southbound in the area of Tallapoosa Street and the airport, said Sgt. Johnny Williams.

That gunfire, he said, hit two vehicles. A man in one of those vehicles was injured, which caused him to collide with another vehicle. That victim was seriously injured but is in stable condition. He was taken to UAB Hospital by Birmingham Fire and Rescue.

Williams said no other injuries were reported. Police are continuing to gather information and search for the suspect's vehicle. No additional information as immediately available.
