Playing at The Pit is a dream come true for high school basketball teams across the state.
One small town New Mexico team never expected to make it there. Newcomb High School made history Friday, playing in the state tournament for the first time in school history.
The Newcomb High School Skyhawks played relentlessly on the court of the Pit.
“It was a great honor,” said Deontay Begay, a junior at Newcomb High School.
This is the first time in school history the Skyhawks have made it to the state tournament.
“It’s a very special moment,” said Deion Johnhat, a junior at Newcomb High School.
Their fans, packing the stands, driving three hours to support the players who made history this season.
“It feels great, you know? Our fans are like our sixth man,” said Deion.
Deontay Begay, a junior at Newcomb High School, says he never expected to play at The Pit.
“I’m speechless right now,” said Deontay.
He says his team put in the hours.
“All of our late nights and our early morning practices, it really pays off,” said Deontay.
Newcomb High School is so small it doesn’t have its own band or cheerleaders. The band and cheerleaders from their rival, Kirtland Central High School, stuck around after supporting their girls’ team to cheer on Newcomb.
Newcomb High School beat Mesilla Valley Christian by two points.
