SAN MARTIN — A Gilroy man died after he was hit by a speeding car while walking across Monterey Road on Friday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision was reported about 5:50 p.m. in the southbound lanes at Church Avenue after a 2018 Jeep hit the man, who was walking east to west across Monterey Road, the CHP said.

Hugo Hernandez, 66, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The CHP reported that the driver, a 43-year-old Gilroy woman, was traveling between 70 and 75 mph. The posted speed limit in the area is 50 mph. Sunset was at 4:56 p.m. Friday.

No citation or arrest was made in the wake of the fatal collision, and the CHP said that “at this time it is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in this collision.”
