Highland Park High School Ranked No. 27 In Chicago Area

HPHS is the 18th-best high school without selective enrollment in the multi-state metro area, according to U.S. News & World Report.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — Highland Park High School is the 27th-best high school in the Chicago metro area, according to new rankings from U.S. News & World Report. The publication released its rankings of best high schools by metropolitan area Wednesday. Though they are separate from the publication's annual ranking of the nation's top high schools, the latest list was compiled using the same methodology.

The five top-ranked high schools in the area are selective enrollment Chicago Public Schools, each of which made the top 100 schools nationwide.

Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Libertyville was the highest ranking suburban high school in the rankings, with HPHS ranked 18th in the area among high schools outside of the city of Chicago.

Annual 2018 per pupil spending numbers for each district come from the Illinois State Board of Education, which reports a state average of about $13,337 in operational spending per student every year.

U.S. News said it matched metro areas with corresponding core-based statistical areas, which include both metropolitan and micropolitan areas (with populations of 10,000 and 50,000) They can include portions of multiple states, and the Chicago area includes schools in Indiana and Wisconsin.

“We’ve heard from students, parents and school officials that they’re interested in seeing how their school compares with others in the community,” Robert Morse, chief data strategist at U.S. News, said in a news release. “With these new rankings, residents in more than 900 metro areas nationwide can see which local schools are succeeding at educating and graduating their students.”

Here are the schools in the Chicago metro area that rank among the top 100 nationally:

  • Payton College Preparatory High School — No. 9
  • Northside College Preparatory High School — No. 23
  • Lane Technical High School — No. 69
  • Young Magnet High School — No. 71
  • Jones College Prep High School — No. 91
