How does State Farm homeowners insurance work?

You can only purchase State Farm homeowners insurance through its network of independent agents. Once you receive a quote, you can choose from three broad tiers of coverage: Essential, Expanded or Premium. You can select add-ons, including flood insurance or earthquake coverage. Once you purchase State Farm homeowners insurance, you’re covered if your home is damaged due to natural disaster, theft or other covered incidents.

What does State Farm homeowners insurance cover?

The standard State Farm homeowners insurance plan provides multiple benefits, including:

  • Dwelling coverage protects the overall structure of your home, including floors, countertops and built-in appliances.
  • Dwelling extension covers structures that are detached from your primary property.
  • Personal liability coverage helps pay for legal fees and medical bills if you’re held responsible for someone being injured on your property.
  • Medical payments coverage helps take care of medical expenses for a guest injured on your property.
  • Loss-of-use coverage handles the cost of a hotel and other necessary expenses if you need to find alternative housing while your home is undergoing repairs.
  • Personal property coverage reimburses you for damaged personal items.

State Farm also has add-ons for those who need extra coverage. Flooding and earthquake coverage are two of the most commonly used add-ons. State Farm add-ons include:

  • Flood insurance provides coverage for natural flooding, which isn’t provided under standard homeowners insurance.
  • Earthquake coverage is not provided on typical homeowners insurance policies but can be added for an additional cost.
  • Full replacement cost covers the actual cost to rebuild your entire home.
  • Home systems protection helps replace several types of home systems, including water filtration systems, air conditioning systems and power generators.
  • Off-premises structures coverage lets you add structures you own that aren’t located on your primary home’s property to your policy.
  • Personal injury liability coverage helps pay for legal costs if someone is injured at your home and the injured party sues you.
  • Sump pump and drain backup covers water damage caused by a faulty sump pump or drain backup.
  • Service lines coverage provides financial protection if underground lines that belong to you need repair or replacement.
  • Umbrella coverage is an extra layer of coverage that protects your assets in a lawsuit. This is a helpful add-on for those with high net worth.
  • Identity theft coverage helps you pay legal fees if your identity is stolen.
  • Energy-efficient upgrade coverage helps pay for the cost if an appliance breaks and you replace it with a more energy-efficient version.
  • Mold coverage helps cover the costs of mold removal.

State Farm home insurance cost

Most policies with State Farm cost between $1,500 a year and $3,000 a year. That comes out to between $125 and $250 a month. More valuable homes typically have annual premiums of $4,000 a year or more. Important factors that affect the cost of your State Farm homeowners insurance include the level of coverage, the value of your home and where you live.

The best way to get a price on homeowners insurance is to request a quote through the State Farm website or to speak to a State Farm agent.

State Farm homeowners insurance FAQ

What does State Farm homeowners insurance not cover?

Standard insurance from State Farm doesn’t cover damage caused by floods or earthquakes. These are two of the most common add-ons people purchase for their homeowners insurance policies, depending on where they live. They’re both worth considering if you think this type of damage is possible. Whatever is not explicitly listed as covered in your policy is not covered.

Does State Farm homeowners insurance cover foundation repair?

It depends. If a natural flood damages your foundation, then foundation repair won’t be covered unless you have purchased flood coverage.

How does State Farm pay homeowners claims?

State Farm can make payments into your bank account, send them in the mail or pay the repairer directly.

Does State Farm homeowners insurance cover water damage?

It depends on the source of the water damage. If the damage comes from a leaking appliance, it’s typically covered. If the cause of damage is a natural flood, you’re only covered if you have a flood damage add-on.

Is State Farm home insurance good?

State Farm offers good coverage for homes. The prices can be a bit high, but the convenient network of agents and multiple available discounts sweeten the deal. Several customers praised the company’s representatives for acting like members of the family when disaster struck.

State Farm refuses to honor their roof replacement claims. We had 2 back to back wind storms resulting in damages all over the area. Obviously we experienced damage resulting in shingles being ripped off, along with gutters, and shutters. Their adjuster claimed only 4 shingles were missing and 40 needed replaced. I have no ridge caps left on my house, that wasn't included in their estimate along with piecing together the gutters that were damaged. Obviously the rest of the roof shingles are now weakened and will eventually blow off In the next storm. Very disgusted since I have been a loyal customer for 30 years and never had a home claim before. They also overvalued the house from the appraisement so that my deductible would be higher, which I didn't find out till I put in this claim. I don't have the funds to pay for a new roof or for silly patchwork, but if you're late on a payment they'll drop you in a heartbeat.

I am moving from my current insurance company due to cost. State Farm was recommended so I submitted all my documents to the Baxter MN office, and I was upfront and told them I had a claim in 2023 for minor water damage due to the historic, record breaking 88" of snow received. The person handling my quote, Brian, asked me more info on my house, how many bedrooms, etc. Mind you, he knew I had a claim on my house. After I wasted my time getting him this information, he tells me that their "underwriters" denied my application for home AND vehicle because of the $1,200 claim last year, that was from an act of God. So this company holds things against you that were out of your control. Stay away from this company.

The only thing I as a consumer can say is, beware! If you use the insurance that you pay for, they will drop you!. The branch in Cleveland Heights under Anita ** will drop your Home Insurance. Read the reviews everyone. You would think our Law Makers would protect us for companies like State Farm Home Insurance but they don’t. Four homes and two incidents totaling a whopping $4000.00 dollars within five years after paying for over 30 years of coverage. Will make it hard for you to get cover for any home insurance. What is happening to our country. How can we protect ourselves. This is madness!

I had to file a claim with State Farm on my homeowner policy. I honestly feel blessed because State Farm took such excellent care of us at our time of need. Our agent Steve ** and our adjuster Mark ** were honestly concerned about our well being and they made filing a claim so easy. We had a leak in our roof and in the coldest part of winter. When the snow began to melt we developed an ice dam. Water from the melting snow came into our home and caused such a mess and even the sheet rock on the wall of the master bedroom turned to mud!

The floor was soaked and it was not safe for my husband and myself to remain in our home as I have lung cancer and my husband has COPD and we both had suffered a stroke within the last two years. We had never filed a claim before and we had always done our home repairs and upgrades ourselves, as we had both work in home construction for years. Now due to health issues we are no longer able to do these things. I honestly feel blessed by the way State Farm stepped up and took such great care of our family home and my husband and myself! Both Steve ** our agent and Mark ** our adjusters were so kind and caring!

Their response to our claim was immediate and they went above and beyond anything we expected to ensure that we were comfortably housed while repairs were underway and they made sure that all measures were taken to maintain our health needs and kept us safe from the hazards that in play due to the damage at our home. They got the best restoration company to work on our home the same day we filed the claim and they had us moved into a nice hotel suite for the duration of repairs. The provided us with living expenses and so much more. They helped us through everything. I can't begin to thank them enough. I also thank God for State Farm! Our home is only a few days from being completely restored and State Farm covered everything under our homeowners policy. If we could tell everyone in the world, that we believe State Farm is the best insurance to have...we would!

I watch the commercials on Super Bowl. I watch the commercials during my programs. And I really did want to say that. This is a great company, but this has been one of the worst experiences dealing with an Insurance Company. I've ever had 5 months 5 months of waiting on a small check. No communication besides email, no callbacks from the claims office. This has been just terrible terrible customer service. Terrible people. A lot of lies. I wouldn't recommend this company to anybody.

Had hail damage to my roof had to have a roofing company install a tarp for a temp fix while, awaiting the insurance adjuster to come and inspect, in the meantime, I had three different roofing companies come and tell me that this roof needed to be replaced. State Farm sent the first one and they said it wasn’t damaged enough to justify complete roof replacement. I told him about the three roofing companies and ask them what their requirements/guidance was on complete roof replacement. They sent another inspector and he agreed. Then they sent a third inspector. I had to pay out-of-pocket to replace my roof at a cost of $19,000 so I canceled my homeowners and all three of my vehicles with them and went to USAA.

Two of my neighbors had the same exact experience with multiple adjusters that came out and their claims were denied. They too cancel State Farm. I cannot provide their names because I do not have their permission. As I’m writing this review all three roofing companies told me that State Farm was the worst to try and get them to give the consumer what we pay for. I don’t care if it cost a little bit more money. Do not get your homeowners insurance from State Farm.

Worst company ever. They promise you one thing and they do another. Very unorganized in all aspects. They promise you a callback and after my repeated calls to actually talk to the agent with the answers to my concerns, nothing. I keep getting told that the Agent will call me back and after 1 week still nothing. Very poor customer service. I wouldn’t recommend them if they were the last Company on Earth. Stay Away!!!

We had a poor experience with State Farm Homeowner’s Insurance. We filed a claim regarding our toilet tank leaking water from the bottom left side of the toilet tank in our master bedroom upstairs. The toilet was repaired by the plumber. The leaked water caused from the toilet in the master bedroom caused damage to our laundry room ceiling downstairs causing multiple brown stains on the ceiling. We filed an insurance claim with State Farm and had an adjuster inspect the damage, and was told the damage was not covered due to mold build up on the bottom of the left side of the toilet tank and it is not covered. Very poor experience with State Farm!

My parents' house has been damaged for 9 months, and State Farm has done nothing but delay and deny them. State Farm sent out 5 different adjusters, all of which were from out of state and had no knowledge of construction cost in their area. They finally hired a construction company to compare bids with my parents' hired construction company. That company verbally told my parents and their public adjuster that their bid would come in the same as theirs and when State Farm released the bid amount it was substantially less. They have already hired a public adjuster and he doesn't think he can do anymore. Their next step is to hire an attorney. It's so sad. My parents are 73 and 81 and haven't been able to reside in their home for 9 months. Please don't give this terrible company any more business.

State Farm is horrible for home insurance. They dropped us after filing a claim for a leaky water pipe. We paid them over $11,000 in home insurance over the last 5 years. We filed a claim for a pipe that was leaking from our kitchen down to the basement. They paid us $1,120 to get it fixed and then dropped us right after. They say like a good neighbor State Farm is there, but that's not the case at all. All they care about is making money off you and then they drop you when you need help. That's not a good neighbor at all. I'm always telling people how horrible they are. My wife and I were so furious that they dropped us in an instant like that.
