ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The City of St. Petersburg honored its fallen police officers with a memorial service at Demens Landing Tuesday evening.

"Today, my message is simple, it's simply 'Thank you,' Mayor Rick Kriseman told the crowd who were gathered at the Law Enforcement Memorial at the park.

The service included the traditional Presentation of Colors, wreath presentation, bells tolling for the fallen officers, 21 gun salute and taps.

Historically, 15 police officers have been killed in St. Petersburg in the line of duty.

"They showed courage when most would have fled," said Chief Anthony Holloway.

K-9 Officer Jeffrey Yaslowitz was killed in 2011. His wife, Lorraine, attended the memorial service with family members.

She said they're doing well but moving forward is always tough.

"For our family, that's the hardest part," she said. "We really sometimes break down because there are these momentous milestones and he's not here to see it, but I know he knows and I know he'll know all about it when we are all together again."

The city has not had an officer killed in the line of duty since 2011.
