Thousands of hair straighteners across the country have been recalled over fears that they can give you an electric shock.

More than 4,000 of the Lee Stafford Coco Loco straighteners, have been identified as a ‘potential hazard’.

A warning about hair styling tool, which usually retails for £55, was issued yesterday.

The safety notice, which was issued by domestic appliance retailer MPL Home, says a problem has been identified involving the swivel mains connection of the appliance.

There have been two reported cases where it has failed, allowing the mains lead to pull out from the straightener.

This could potentially result in an electric shock for the customer if it’s plugged in at the mains.

How to check if an appliance is faulty

A tool by Electrical Safety First allows you to check if your appliance has been recalled since 2007.

The Chartered Institute of Trading Standards has a list of recent product recalls on it site.

You should also register your details with a manufacturer as soon as you buy an item.

You can do this directly or register with the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances service and they will tell you when a product is recalled or a safety alert is issued.

Product recalls are an important means of protecting consumers from dangerous goods.

Many safety notices for products are issued as a precautionary measure, letting consumers know an item may be dangerous.
