Recovery efforts continue for the victims of a devastating fire in New York's North Country.

The fire in Chateaugay gutted an apartment complex, leaving 19 people homeless, two of them children. Now, the community is rallying together to help.

"Even though this is Malone and that is Chateaugay, we're still one big community," said Barbara Nason of Malone.

After learning about the fire in Chateaugay, Community Connections reached out to provide help.

"Household items, they can be clothing, they can be decorative, they can be furniture," said Lee Rivers of Community Connection. "If you are unable to drop it off, we will pick it up from you and bring it here."

In the roughly 48 hours since the fire, the donation are racking up.

"This will go on until the last individual family has been housed from the fire," Rivers said.

"I brought in several box springs, a bed frame that was steel, things that I had on hand. I had to downsize anyway," said Marian Stutzman of Chateaugay.

Stutzman wasn't the only one who felt the urge to give back.

"When I heard about the fire, it brought back memories because three years ago my family went through something similar, our house burned down and we lost everything," Nason said.

Sharing this loss in common, Nason says it's not just things people need.

"Getting them the support they need, listening to them," she said.

And Nason had a message for the affected families.

"It's really rough right now, you're going through a lot, you don't know which way to turn," she said. "Just know that the community is there to care for you and help you and you will get through this."
