MONTEREY — A Seaside man died Saturday after losing control of his motorcycle and crashing into the center divide.

According to the California Highway Patrol, William Hamilton, 28, was riding a gray 2016 Yamaha motorcycle at an unknown speed on eastbound Monterey-Salinas Highway at 5:37 p.m. Saturday when he lost control of his vehicle and allowed it to strike the crash attenuator, a device intended to reduce the damage to motorists, just east of the Fremont Street overcrossing in the center divide.

He came to rest in the center divide of Monterey-Salinas Highway and the motorcycle came to rest in the No. 1 lane of westbound Monterey-Salinas Highway. Due to the impact, Hamilton sustained major, life-threatening injuries. Emergency personnel rendered aid to Hamilton on scene and transported him to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula for care. He died about an hour later.

According to the CHP, drugs or alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the crash.
