Girl, 5, stabbed in London, Ont., father charged with attempted murder

WATCH ABOVE: Police say the 5-year-old girl was stabbed several times. Her father was arrested at the home early Tuesday morning. Lama Nicolas reports.

TORONTO – A 38-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after his 5-year-old daughter was rushed to hospital early Tuesday with multiple stab wounds.

The girl was said to have life-threatening injuries; her condition has since been upgraded to stable.

The man is being held in custody and expected to appear in court Wednesday.

London police said the incident happened just after 6 a.m. on Applegreen Grove. Officials were tight-lipped at first, only saying an adult male had been arrested at the scene and taken to police headquarters.

“It is an attempted murder investigation and the injuries are life-threatening to the victim,” London Police Service Const. Melissa Duncan told Global News early Tuesday.

She said the case was a stressful one for all involved, considering the young age of the victim.

“Obviously when a child’s involved there’s many emotions not only for any family members but also the officers that are responding to those types of situations.”

A Critical Incident Stress Management team will work with officers to provide any counselling they may need.

The Major Crime Section is continuing the investigation.
