USC update: With a 39-36 win over Washington State on Friday night, the Trojans avoided what would have been a disastrous 1-3 start and ended a two-game losing streak. They have started 1-3 only once since 2001. … The win, coming at the Coliseum, extended the Trojans’ home winning streak to 18 games, the second-longest active streak in the FBS behind only Alabama (20). … True freshman quarterback JT Daniels threw for three touchdowns against the Cougars to three receivers: Michael Pittman, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Tyler Vaughns. Daniels had not thrown for a touchdown since the first of his career in the season opener. … The 435 yards allowed by USC’s defense against Washington State was a season worst, and it was the second straight week the Trojans had allowed 30 or more points. … The Trojans did not receive any votes for The Associated Press top 25 poll for the second straight week.
Arizona update: Entering the season, the Wildcats were considered among the top contenders in the Pac-12 South, picked to finish third in the division in the annual media poll behind USC and Utah, and received three first-place votes. But they struggled early in the season, dropping the first two games to BYU and Houston. … Part of Arizona’s troubles have been due to dual-threat quarterback Khalil Tate’s injured ankle. Tate, regarded as a preseason Heisman Trophy candidate, has been limited as a runner with only 31 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. … Sophomore running back J.J. Taylor has picked up the slack and leads the Pac-12 in rushing through four games with 477 yards and three touchdowns. … Arizona leads the conference in total offense with 519 yards per game and ranks fourth in scoring offense with 34.5 points per game. … The Wildcats last defeated USC in Tucson in 2012. … Arizona has won consecutive games, including a 35-14 win at Oregon State on Saturday in its Pac-12 opener.
