UPDATE: Plane crashes near Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport, injuring two people

WEYERS CAVE — A small plane crashed just after 7 p.m. near Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport in Weyers Cave Monday. 

According to Greg Campbell, the airport's executive director, the small plane crashed just off of airport property. Campbell had limited information on the incident. 

Virginia State Police responded to the plane crash just outside the property of the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport in Weyers Cave.

According to VSP, a Piper PA-28-140 with a pilot and one passenger were on board doing touch-and-go landings at the airport.

As the small plane was attempting to land, the pilot's controls became unresponsive which caused the plane to drift left, VSP said. The plane caught a limb and then hit several trees just outside the airport property, the release said

The 17-year-old male pilot from Romney, West Virginia was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center for treatment of serious, but non-life threatening injuries, VSP said. The passenger, ajuvenile male taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have both been notified and the crash remains under investigation, VSP said.

According to Campbell, he doesn't know which airport the small plane originally flew out of, but he assumes it was headed to Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport.
