2 teens get about a year for Roger Trindade's beating death
WEBVTT OVER THIS OUTCOME. AFTER NEARLY TWO YEARS OF -- >> AFTER NEARLY TWO YEARS OF HEARINGS, DEPOSITIONS, AND DISTRESS FOR ROGER TRINDADE’S FAMILY, AN ORANGE COUNTY JUDGE SENTENCED THE TWO BOYS RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS DEATH. BOTH SIMEON HALL AND JESSE SUTHERLAND WILL SERVE TIME IN THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM. THE AVERAGE TIME SERVED, PER THE STATE ATTORNEY’S OFFICE, IS NINE TO TWELVE MONTHS, BUT IT ALL DEPENDS ON BEHAVIOR. IT COULD BE MORE, OR IT COULD BE LESS. AFTER THAT, THEY’LL BE ON CONDITIONAL RELEASE. THE EXACT CONDITIONS ARE UP THE DEPARTMENT OF JUVENILE JUSTICE. THE TWO SENTENCES ARE ESSENTIALLY IDENTICAL, IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT HALL WAS ARRESTED FOR A SEPARATE BEATING, WHILE HE WAS OUT AWAITING TRIA >> DO YOU THINK THE SENTENCE IS APPROPRIATE? DAVID FUSSEL: I DO BECAUSE OF THE MISSTEPS THAT SIMEON HAD I THINK IT WAS MORE APPROPRIATE FOR HIM TO GET THE SENTENCE AND JESSE YOU KNOW HE’S THE ONE WHO THROUGH THE PUNCH. >> THE TWO TEENS WERE TRIED AND CONVICTED AS ADULTS. THE JUDGE’S DECISION LAST MONTH TO SENTENCE THEM AS JUVENILES INFURIATED ROGER TRINDADE’S FAMILY, PROMPTING HIS MOTHER TO SEND A SCATHING LETTER TO THE JUDGE. THE JUDGE READ THAT LETTER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN COURT TODA OVER FACETIME, HIS FAMILY TOLD ME THEY FELT THE JUDGE DOESN’T CARE, AND THAT JUSTICE WAS NOT SERVED >> THEY NEVER SAY SORRY. SUTHERLAND NEVER SAY SORRY TO US. HE KILLED ROGER. >> I’VE LEARNED FROM THE STATE ATTORNEY’S OFFICE THAT HALL AND SUTHERLAND ARE BOTH IN CUSTODY NOW, AND WILL BEGIN THEIR SENTENCES AS SOON AS BEDS OPEN UP IN THEIR PROGRAM. REPORTING IN ORANGE COUNTY
