Seg. 1: Gambling Addiction. Seg. 2: Danielle Nicole

Segment 1: The dark side of gambling.

Gambling often conjures up images of casinos, slot machines, and sports betting. But as our guests point out, gambling isn't all fun and games — it can also turn into addiction. One that can have an even greater impact on communities of color.

  • Holly Edgell, editor for Sharing America, St. Louis Public Radio
  • Kevin Bost, former gabbling addict
  • Timothy Fong, professor of addiction psychiatry and co-director, UCLA Gambling Studies Program

Segment 2, (beginning at 36:43): A local blues artist is up for her first Grammy.

In December, Kansas City-based artist Danielle Nicole found out she was nominated for a Grammy for Contemporary Blues Album for her second solo project, "Cry No More." We talk to Danielle on her way to the awards show in Los Angeles, where she'll find out if she's won her first Grammy on Sunday night.

People don't make cameos in news stories; the human story is the story, with characters affected by news events, not defined by them. As a columnist and podcaster, I want to acknowledge what it feels like to live through this time in Kansas City, one vantage point at a time. Together, these weekly vignettes form a collage of daily life in Kansas City as it changes in some ways, and stubbornly resists change in others.
