A shopper was horrified when she opened a tray of Aldi eggs to find one appeared to have a tentacle sprouting out of it.

The egg was one of ten in an 80p budget box purchased from an Aldi store in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.

Mother of four Lavern Dooley, 54, said she was just about to break it into a pan to do a fry-up for her teenage son when she noticed something funny about it.

'As I was about to pick it up I saw this weird stalk poking out of it. It looked like a tentacle,' she said.

'From what I could see of the shell it was if something inside had been trying to get out.

'I felt physically sick. I thought a chick was going to pop out on the kitchen table.

'When I touched the tentacle and realised whatever it was was dead I still felt queasy.

'It's put me off eggs for a while. I chucked the rest of them straight in the bin.'

Supermarket bosses are baffled what the weird growth is and how it slipped through all checks to end up on the shelves having been bought on November 4.

The chain is now tracing the egg back to the farm where it was laid to find out what happened.

Aldi said the growth should have been spotted, particularly as it was so obvious.

'We are sorry this incident happened and wish to advise you that we have not received any other customer complaints in regard to this product,' they wrote.

'Of course, we appreciate this does not change your experience and regret any distress you may have been caused.

'I would like to reassure you that Aldi will continue to insist on the highest standards from our suppliers and we monitor all customer feedback in relation to our products and services.'

An Aldi spokesman said its customer services team was looking into the matter.
