Barbican is well-known for staging shows that push the traditional boundaries of art-form, so it comes as no surprise that Kiss & Cry, a Charleroi Danses production coming to Barbican between 25-28 June, sounds completely different to any other production on stage right now.

An interdisciplinary performance that combines live cinematography, digital technology and dance performed by hands alone, Kiss & Cry is a highly original visual feast.

Imagine the stage filled by a bustling film crew. Sound effects are created live on stage by foley artists. As the performers’ hands begin their balletic dance around a miniature set incorporating toys, figurines, sand, earth, water and more, the action is captured up-close by camera and projected onto a panoramic screen behind the stage for all to see.

It’s a dual effect - concentrate on the big screen to follow the intricacies of the miniature world and moving story of a woman recalling the great, lost loves of her life. Or avoid the limitations of the camera by surveying the scene as a whole, and examine the effect of the entire cast working in unison to create an at once beautifully simple and technically complex story. As choreographer Michèle Anne De Mey and filmmaker Jaco Van Dormael succinctly explain:

“Kiss & Cry tells a story, and at the same time reveals the mechanics of how the story is brought to life”
