PORTSMOUTH HERALD

Tallan Noble Latz is Stevie Ray Vaughn reincarnated

9-year-old guitarist wows judges, crowd

Fred Dame, Jr.

Editor's note: The following TV recap was written by musician Fred Dame Jr. of York, Maine, who auditioned in Boston for this season of "America's Got Talent."

Okay readers, sorry that this recap is late this week. I had Harry Potter fever with my family and attended the midnight showing of Harry Potter Tuesday evening.

Thank goodness for my DVR! We loved "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" so much, we went to go and see the 3:15 a.m. showing at Regal Cinema right after the midnight showing. Oh well, we are hardcore Harry Potter fans. Thank you to my girlfriend, Jen, for putting up with it and my son, Devin, for loving it as much as I do!

Anyway, on to the recap:

Since I am condensing the two nights of audition footage into one recap, I will not give much mention to the bad acts that auditioned. Sorry, but it's getting close to the Vegas eliminations, so I just want to talk about those who made it through.

Now, even though I said I wouldn't mention the bad acts that didn't make it through, I have to mention Alex Feldman. I actually met Feldman during my audition attempt in Boston. His act consisted of playing his recorder (flute) with his nose and sticking a port glass in his mouth. I remember him because he got pulled out of the regular auditions and was brought to a second audition room. Obviously, he got pulled from regular auditions because of the nature of his act. I guess even the bad acts get special treatment. It kind of makes me understand that maybe the Boston auditions got mixed in with the New York auditions and so Boston got lost in the mix. Oh well, there is next year.

The most memorable act from Tuesday night's auditions was 9-year-old guitarist, Tallan Noble Latz. I sat there and watched in awe, this kid was awesome! Some of his influences included Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn, and the studio audience, the judges and I could definitely hear that in his performance.

Latz reminds me of another child prodigy guitarist that I know of personally, local guitar legend Tim Theriault. Oh by the way, congrats Tim, for being a new father!

Latz got three amazing yes votes and it's just a matter of time before we get to hear him play once again on the "America's Got Talent" stage.

Certainly, one of Tuesday night's favorites was 74-year-old retired barber, Tony Ferrante. He delighted the audience with his disco dancing, dressed in 80s disco garb. As the audience chanted his name, the judges gave their votes to send him into the next round....well, except for Piers Morgan, who thought that judges Hasselhoff and Osbourne had lost their marbles for putting him though!

The audience chanted Tony's name again, and he came out and gave a little dance and gave the people what they wanted. With head in hands, Piers Morgan could not believe it as Tony left the stage to tumultuous applause.

Next to the stage came Kelly Glover, a 26-year-old casino worker from Vegas.

Glover explained that she had been on Season 1 of "American Idol" and now, after six years, wanted another chance on "America's Got Talent." Demonstrating her vocal abilities, Glover launched herself into the next round to Vegas and possibly to the stardom she had been denied earlier on "American Idol" season one.

Following her came the Platt Brothers, outdoors-y types who never watched TV growing up. Without the influence of television, they grew up playing outdoors and learning dance and gymnastic skills. This proved to be beneficial for the boys, as they wowed the audience with their gymnastic abilities set to music. Boasting the fact that they were entertaining and unique, the judges gave them three yesses and sent them on their way to the next round.

Ending the night were Spiritual Harmonizers, hailing from Richmond, Va. This vocal group of seven postal workers amazed the audience with their vocal harmonies and gave the judges goose bumps! Three yesses from the judges and Spiritual Harmonizers secured their spot in the next round.

Wednesday night's auditions yielded some pretty great acts and was a thrill to watch. Where do I begin?

Forty-three-year-old radiologist Kari Callin took the stage and floored the whole building with her rendition of "West Side Story"'s "Somewhere," An emergency-room tech in Seattle, Kari was turned down before, when she auditioned for a cruise ship. The auditioner had told her that she wasn't what they were looking for.

Struggling with a cleft palate, Kari found singing to be her salvation and something that she really loved to do. It is her dream.

With her unbelievable performance, the judges all said "yes" and sent her to the next round of the competition. As Piers Morgan said, "never judge a book by its cover."

He is absolutely right!

In New York, "America's got Talent" put Simon Chaban, fire acrobat, Keith Johnson, singer, and the Pixie Mystere dance troupe through to the next round. But the night's surprise came in the form of harpist/singer Rashida Jolley. This 26-year-old women astounded the audience with her rendition of "Killing Me Softly" by Roberta Flack. Even Piers Morgan said that it was quite unique and gave his "yes" vote. The others followed suit and sent her on her way to play another day.

Matt and Anthony made their way to the stage and declared that they had no name for their act. Any suggestions people? As one played guitar and sang very well, the other tap danced with Gregory Hines like precision! It was a great act, and I look forward to the next thing that they bring to the table!

Finally, the night ended with a contestant from last season, Mia Boostrom. Boostrom got eliminated last year after the Vegas rounds and has since worked on coming back this season. A little more seasoned and mature, Boostrom play the piano and sang to the surprise of the judges. In the judges' words, she came back with more personality and more star quality. However, Judge Piers Morgan voiced his concern on whether she was good enough to go to the finals. With that being said, the judges put her through to Vegas, a place she had been before, last year. Does she have enough to send herself past Vegas and on to unknown territory? I guess we will have to see in two weeks, when "America's Got Talent" starts its week in Vegas to determine who has it and who doesn't!

Next week, the auditions continue with a special Myspace edition of "America's Got Talent." All of the auditioners are those that were picked from Myspace. This should be very interesting.

On a side note, why did the Wednesday night episode have to end with Mariah Carey's Video premiere? Well, I guess it's good when you are married to the host of AGT, Nick Cannon.

See you next week, when I have fully recovered from my Harry Potter fever. Oh, in case you were wondering....I will probably go and see again this weekend. I just love matinees!
