To encourage young people to begin the lifelong hobby of stamp collecting, also known as philately, the Spellman Museum of Stamps & Postal History at Regis College in Weston is giving free admission to all youngsters throughout October.

This offer is part of the museum’s celebration of National Stamp Collecting Month. Free packets of stamps, plus various stamp collecting materials and an instruction booklet, await all future collectors.

In addition, stamp games and hunts in the museum’s galleries will help introduce all visitors to the wide world of stamps.

Current exhibits include selections from members’ collections, comics on stamps, mail carried by Zepellins, a history of rural free delivery, a celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, and even a dress made out of a stamp.

In addition, a free booklet featuring famous Hispanic Americans on U.S. stamps will be available.

The museum also offers (for a small fee) evaluations of personal stamp collections by appointment.

A Family Day is scheduled for Halloween, Oct. 31, from noon to 4 p.m. Teachers who wish to bring their students to the museum or have a program presented at their school will receive a discount if they register this month for visits anytime in the school year.

Coming in November is an exhibit on the history of the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School, a free comic book evaluation night, and a visit from an Amelia Earhart impersonator on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.

The museum is also a post office, selling current stamps, and has a gift shop of stamp-related items and supplies.
