The African American History Initiative Seeks Black Writers of Bartow County History.

The African American History Initiative, a standing committee of the Etowah Valley Historical Society, seeks black authors to collaborate in writing historical narrative about African American history in Bartow County.  A group of authors might choose to interview citizens recalling life in Bartow County before, during and after the integration of schools; do research on black businesses, black culture in food, art and music, on the lives of prominent African Americans from Bartow County; interpret the role of churches in the freedom movement or other subjects.  This is the perfect opportunity for authors to publish on the EVHS web site, in the EVHS Newsletter and to see other potential outcomes of work completed, ie a compendium of articles published in a book, a collection of black family stories recorded for posterity.

Articles comprising a written narrative of black history are needed in the recorded collective history of Bartow County.  Visit evhsonline.org, scroll to bottom of home page, click on Author's Corner to see the bank of articles on Bartow County history in many subjects.  Alexis Carter, the first black author to publish at EVHS, will soon be represented in the Author's Corner.  Contact Mina Harper, chairman of the African American History Initiative of EVHS at jdonharp@aol.com to participate.

Shy about writing?  If you are black, a native of Bartow or have lived here long enough to appreciate it, are interested in preserving the African American history and culture of Bartow, want to personally contribute to its conservation, then the content and perspective you offer are needed.  The writing can be edited.
