DUMFRIES, VA—A fugitive was shot and killed Friday after trying to flee from authorities at a Days Inn on 16925 Old Stage Road, according to Prince William County Police. Mario Dantoni Bass, 37, of the 15700 block of Tassleford Lane in Woodbridge, was taken to an area hospital where he later died. He was wanted on 11 warrants, most recently abduction and domestic assault and battery on Feb. 15.

Around 9 a.m., members of the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force acted on a tip that Bass might be staying at the motel. When police went to his room, he broke through an upper floor window and fled before being confronted by a task force member at the rear of the motel. He was shot while trying to fight off the officer, police said.

The officer was from Immigration & Customs Enforcement, or ICE. A mandatory investigation will be conducted into the officer's actions, after which the Commonwealth Attorney's Office will make a "determination regarding criminal liability."
