A 999 worker gave tips over the phone as she helped her daughter Laura, 36, give birth — while son-in-law Darren, 31, looked on in awe.

The drama came as Maureen was driving the couple from their home in Aviemore to Raigmore Hospital, Inverness.

She said: "Laura told me we weren't going to get there so we had to stop. I put my wheels up on the verge on the A9 near Carrbridge."

Darren got out to call an ambulance and got through to a call centre assistant.

He said: "The woman told me to stay calm. When I got back and opened the car door I could see the baby's head. I was quite stressed."

But he saw Maureen deliver a healthy 7lbs 12oz brother for Roan, two.

She said: "He had beautiful colour — very pink. He was lovely. And we found something to wrap him in."

An address mix-up led to the family waiting 40 minutes for an ambulance to Raigmore.

But mum and baby were fine — and Darren hailed his brave mum-in-law, saying: "She was brilliant."
