CloudMagic, the company behind the pretty popular Newton Mail App, has announced that it will be shutting down the service on September 25. The company is citing it is as a “tough business decision”, and not as a buyout or acquisition. CloudMagic will be offering partial refunds to those that did pay for Newton Mail. The app has been available for all of the popular platforms out there including Android, iOS, macOS and Windows. It was a cloud-based mail service that made it easier to keep track of your emails, sorting them and also setting up reminders. Many people resorted to using Newton because it had many more features than what Microsoft, Apple and Google were all offering to its users, though it was still pretty tough for Newton to compete with those, seeing as those offerings were free.

The shut off date for Newton is September 25, and that is a little over a month away, and to prepare for the shut down, Newton will not be taking any more new sign ups for the service. Monthly subscriptions will no longer be renewed, and those on a yearly subscription will get a partial refund – depending on when their subscription is up. Newton says that the partial refunds will be announced by September 18 – so expect an email about a week before Newton officially shuts down. CloudMagic is working with both Apple and Google to be able to do these partial refunds, since users were paying through in-app purchases using Apple’s App Store or Google’s Play Store.

Despite being a paid email app, Newton was actually a pretty popular app. It had gained over 40,000 paid subscribers, over the five years that it was in existence. It didn’t start doing subscriptions until 2016, so that Newton actually had over four million users, from its free service and its premium service combined. Which is no small feat, and CloudMagic’s CEO, Rohit Nadhani stated in the blog post today “we want to say a big THANK YOU to all our users.” That’s because without those users, Newton wouldn’t have been around this long. But financially, Newton couldn’t stick around, so CloudMagic is shutting it down.
