Bridge Work To Delay Traffic In Braintree

Due to the Route 3 Bridge Replacement Project, there will be detours and lane reductions on Route 3 in Braintree on two weekends.

BRAINTREE, MA – Bridge work on Route 3 is expected to have an impact on traffic during a pair of weekends.

Due to the Route 3 Bridge Replacement Project, there will be detours and lane reductions on Route 3 in Braintree on the weekends of Sept. 22-25 and Oct. 13-16, according to MassDOT.

During the work, crews, as part of a $6.3 million project will replace two bridges that carry Route 3 over an Interstate 93 ramp just south of the Braintree split, and will put in place setups that will reduce traffic from three to two lanes in each direction and detour traffic away from these bridges.

“A great amount of planning and consideration has gone into this project and work has been designed so that the major construction work associated with replacing these two bridges will occur in just two weekends in order to minimize the impact on the traveling public and local communities,” Acting Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver said in a release. “We encourage the public to avoid traveling through these locations during our accelerated construction work and make informed decisions on route and timing of travel in order to reach their destinations in an efficient manner and do their part to reduce congestion.”

MassDOT will hold a local forum at Braintree Town Hall on Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the project, delays, and impacts.

The full hours for the traffic impacts are as follows:

  • Sept. 22, 10 p.m. to Sept. 25, 5 a.m. - Replacing the bridge on Route 3 northbound
  • Oct. 13, 10 p.m. to Oct. 16, 5 a.m. - Replacing the bridge on Route 3 southbound

In order to accommodate construction operations, crews will implement “crossovers” so that all traffic is diverted away from these bridges and shifted onto the adjacent side of the roadway and a nearby ramp. Nearby ramps will also be detoured, and law enforcement details and variable messaging boards will be in place in order to guide drivers during these times.
