NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - December 20, 2013) - Alan Strobel, M.D., Director, Healthcare Compliance for North American Partners in Anesthesia, hit it big when he was notified that he had won $6.2 million in the New York Lottery on December 5, 2013. Strobel and his wife Tammy won along with six other New York residents. Dr. and Mrs. Strobel received ceremonial checks at the opening of the lottery's new Long Island Customer Service Center in Plainview. Strobel won without actually buying a ticket; he participates in a lottery subscription program that allows individuals to play the same numbers for set amounts of time.

The New York Lottery calls winners if they don't claim the prize on their own. When the call first came in, Dr. Strobel's wife was skeptical. She hung up after receiving the initial call from the Lottery's Prize Payment Unit, because she believed it was a scam. After the unit called back, she told her husband about the call.

"I did my own research and confirmed the number was real before calling anyone back," Dr. Strobel noted. "You have to understand, we never had any expectation of getting a call like this."

Dr. Strobel chose the winning six numbers using a combination of birthdays and anniversary dates that he had been playing for years. Dr. and Mrs. Strobel opted to receive a onetime lump payment of $3,912,722, which is $2,589,439 net, per lottery officials. The couple plans to donate a portion of their winnings to various charities.

For the past 13 years, Alan Strobel, M.D., has served as Director, Division of Obstetrical Anesthesiology at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY. In addition, Dr. Strobel serves as an assistant professor the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, providing clinical training, expertise and research opportunities to the residents.
