Does Kim Jong-un speak English and how did he communicate with Donald Trump at the Singapore summit?

AGAINST all odds, the US President and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have enjoyed a tête-à-tête at the Singapore summit.

But what is the language of diplomacy for this pair - and does the North Korean leader speak the President's language? Here's what we know.

Does Kim Jong-un speak English?

The highly secretive tyrant isn't often expected to speak another language, so it will come as no surprise that few have heard his attempts at talking English.

However, Kim's high school teacher has revealed that the dictator may know a little more English than he lets on.

In an interview with NBC's Today show, Michel Riesen said Kim probably does know English - but pretends not to.

Michel Riesen told Keir Simmons: "He was a good student, but he wasn't extraordinary."

Riesen claims Kim attended an English-language international school in Gümligen, near Bern in Switzerland, when he was 14 years old.

And he said he taught Kim sports, math, and German, and was also his homeroom teacher.

Riesen said his advice for Trump would be to "try to find the sense of humor" that Kim has.

How did Kim communicate with Donald Trump at the Singapore summit?

A pair of translators were present for the pair's one-on-one meeting in June 2018.

The four were expected to be alone together for close to an hour when they met on Singapore's Sentosa Island.

It is unlikely that Kim's school English - however good it may have been - would be strong enough to engage in a full-throttled discussion about denuclearisation.

But interpreters would have had their work cut out, in a meeting where correctly discerning nuances and humour will have been key in the pair forging any kind of working relationship.
