Lee University faculty Dr. Jeneva Moseley and Dr. Caroline Maher-Boulis, along with junior math education major Andrew Cannon presented at the 2015 School Science and Mathematics Association National Convention in Oklahoma City.
“This experience was a great one for me,” said Mr. Cannon. “It opened my eyes to the plethora of ways research impacts the national community. It was humbling to be allowed to be a part of it, and I truly hope I get the opportunity to continue to pursue this into the future.”
Mr. Cannon gave a 50-minute presentation titled “Survivor Math: Fibonacci Sequence and Golden Ratios,” which explained an education game that he designed and implemented in the classroom. The game combines a cooperative-learning teaching technique with themes from the reality show “Survivor.” His presentation reported research results about how this creative activity influenced students’ confidence in communicating mathematics to peers and generated positive attitudes about learning and engagement in the classroom.
“Lee University has always been respected for preparing effective and creative teachers. Students, like Andrew, are now conducting research addressing larger-scale questions about math teaching and learning,” said Dr. Moseley. “This event was distinctly important for Lee’s reputation in the educational research community because knowledge about effective practices was shared with leading educators from across the nation.”
Dr. Moseley, assistant professor of mathematics, and Dr. Maher-Boulis, associate professor of mathematics, presented on “Mathematics Embedded in Real-World Contexts,” which explored the positive results from teaching mathematical concepts through realistic examples.
The School Science and Mathematics Association is an inclusive professional community of researchers and teachers who promote research, scholarship, and practice that improves school science, mathematics and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and advances the integration of science, mathematics and STEM.
