COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - More than two dozen cats will have a new home after being rescued from a hoarding situation in Columbus County last week.

According to Animal Control Manager Joey Prince, about 100 cats will be taken from the residence in the next two weeks, but the shelter is at its maximum capacity for felines.

The hoarding incident has strained the shelter's budget and its on-hand food and litter, but Prince said they have received several donations of food and litter since bringing in the cats.

So far, seven of the hoarded cats have been adopted and 20 of them will be taken to a local farm program where they will be used to control vermin. The shelter will periodically check on the cats that are a part of the farm program.

Most of the cats are in good health, but most will require some type of treatment and medical assessment.

Any rescues or those wanting to adopt the healthy cats and kittens presently in the shelter to make room for the cats and kittens coming in should contact the Columbus County Animal Control at 910-641-3945, or at 288 Legion Drive, Whiteville NC 28472.

The shelter is extending its hours from the normal 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday to make these cats as easy to adopt as possible until cat numbers return to a more manageable level.
