A driver from Camborne who led police on a 100mph chase down the A30 in Cornwall has been jailed for nine months.

Craig Rickard went the wrong way round a roundabout during the 12-minute chase with police along the A30 which ended in Crockernwell, near Exeter, on the night of August 18.

Exeter magistrates heard that the 37-year-old had also hired two bikes from Wadebridge and South Brent, Devon, and then tried to sell them for cash.

One bike was worth £499, which he sold for £150, and the other £1,678, for which he was paid £500 – and which the buyer then saw on Facebook had been stolen. Both buyers were left out of pocket.

Rickard, of Tehidy Mill Cottages, Roscroggan, near Camborne, also filled up his car with £36 fuel which he did not pay for, drove dangerously at Crockernwell and had no insurance and used stolen number plates.

He admitted all the charges when he appeared at Exeter Magistrates' Court last month.

Prosecutor Lyndsey Baker said a police patrol spotted a Vauxhall Vectra travelling at a speed in excess of 100mph on the A30 near Launceston.

The officers began a pursuit with lights and sirens but the car driver did not stop.

The car left the A30 at Woodleigh and ended up in a cul de sac after speeding at 70mph through the built-up village.

Rickard has 40 previous convictions, mostly for theft.

Stephen Nunn, defending, said Rickard was jobless and had no income.

He said his relationship with his partner deteriorated after their baby was stillborn and he went on this "binge of offending".

Judge Geoffrey Mercer, QC, told Rickard at Exeter Crown Court that a few months in jail "would clear his mind".

He jailed him for a total of nine months and banned him from driving for 15 months.
