Fallen Tree Kills Girl In Hammock With Cousin: Police

A girl swinging in a hammock with her cousin was killed Saturday​ when a tree fell on her at a bed and breakfast in Loudon County.

PURCELLVILLE, VA — A girl swinging in a hammock was killed early Saturday night when an old tree the device was tied to fell on her at a family gathering at a farmhouse now used as a bed and breakfast, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. Her cousin suffered minor injuries in the accident.

Around 6 p.m., police responded to the scene and found that two girls were swinging in a hammock. One of the trees to which it was attached fell forward on top of them. Both girls were taken to local hospitals, where one of them died.

The family of Sabina Surjit Henderson told FOX DC the girl was in a hammock tied to the tree with her 8-year-old cousin when a large, old elm gave way and struck the girls.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said the incident was "a tragic accident" that happened about 6 p.m. on Saturday. The property where the family was gathered is Seven Elms Farm.

Sabina was airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital, while her cousin was taken there by ambulance, FOX reports.
