Joe Perry of Aerosmith left his performance at Billy Joel’s Madison Square Garden show on a stretcher after collapsing backstage.

According to TMZ, after Perry played “Walk This Way” with Joel onstage, he “looked terrible” after collapsing in his dressing room. Paramedics arrived, put a tracheal tube down his throat to clear his airway, and took Perry to the hospital on a stretcher with oxygen.

Sources say that Perry, 68, has been having “breathing issues for the last few weeks and it came to a head last night,” noting that it could be due to congestion in the lungs. He is reportedly still in the hospital but is awake and responsive.

Perry had to cancel an appearance last night at a rock fantasy camp in Florida, but is due to begin a string of shows throughout December, making stops in Iowa, Illinois, New York, Philadelphia, North Carolina, and California. He is also set to perform alongside members of Aerosmith for the 18-date “Deuces Are Wild” Las Vegas residency next April in honor of the group’s 50th anniversary.

He explained in an interview with Ultimate Classic Rock that although a farewell tour is expected, “every show could be the last show.”

“You just don’t know…. I always have this attitude, it’s gotta be as good as it can be that day,” he said. “That said, we don’t have a day planned where we say, ‘Okay, this is the last show.’ You can’t picture that. On the other hand, I know there will be a last show just like there’s a one last time for everything in life.”
