It looks like Rapid City will be gaining a new indoor and outdoor archery and air gun range.

Thursday morning the Rapid City Planning Commission approved the application for South Dakota Game Fish and Parks to create this addition to the Outdoor Campus West.

The project has two main components.

The first is a 6,000 square foot building which will house BB gun and archery classes.

The second is an archery range which includes a flat practice range and a walking archery trail.

The overall project will sit on about 19 acres of land.

Outdoor Campus West Director Chad Tussing says, "Unfortunately here close by Rapid, we don't have a public facility that is available for folks to shoot outdoors. There are some private ranges and businesses, but a lot of people that seem like they're interested in it, they spend their time shooting in the backyard so with this project, we're going to create an open, public safe space for everyone to do that and to practice their skills and try new skills."

Unless the city appeals this plan, Tussing says they'll start construction this summer and open the new facility in the fall.
