UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Village of Union City has received a $1 million loan from the USDA Rural Development which will be used to make repairs to the village dam.
The money is part of $243 million that is being invested in 22 states by USDA Rural Development involve 50 projects.
The dam was built in 1923 and includes a powerhouse, a concrete spillway and an earthen embankment which has structural issues.
The proposed project will rebuild the embankment to current engineering standards.
Those standards include a toe drain to collect water seeping through the embankment.
Following the recent rain that has measured nearly four inches, the water at the dam is high and the electric crew was out every two hours during the overnight hours to monitor it and adjust.
A generator is temporarily out of commission, so the dam is only running at half capacity despite all the water.
