CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI – The road is not a buffet.

That’s the word from the Chippewa County Road Commission, which has asked whoever keeps throwing corn on the shoulders of an Upper Peninsula road to stop immediately.

According to a Facebook post by the Sault Ste. Marie based department, corn feed has repeatedly been found on the shoulders of M-48 between Prentiss Bay Road and Goetzville.

Recently, a motorist in the area encountered more than 20 deer eating the corn precariously close to traffic.

“We have no ill will toward the deer and respect your efforts at feeding them but feeding on the shoulders of the highway just creates a hazard for motorists and is very unsafe for the deer, too,” a statement reads. “For the sake of all people and animals involved, please stop this practice.”

The post has proven to be quite popular with Northern Michigan residents. It’s been shared more than 240 times since it was posted.
