UW hires Corey Pompey to replace Michael Leckrone as band director

The University of Wisconsin has chosen a new leader of its famous marching band.

Corey Pompey, director of athletic bands and associate director of bands at the University of Nevada, Reno, starts in July.

Pompey takes over the baton of Michael Leckrone who led the band for the last 50 years.

Pompey studied music education as an undergraduate and graduate student at the University of Alabama. He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Texas-Austin.

Corey Pompey will replace Michael Leckrone as director of the UW marching band. Pompey is director of athletic bands at the University of Nevada, Reno.

He was also assistant director of bands at Penn State University.

Last August, Leckrone announced he was retiring at the end of the school year. He conducted his last UW band spring concerts earlier this month.
